Martin does things the right way!

I was experienced but a fairly rusty kayaker in March

2009, when I enquired about joining a trip to Greenland.

Martin and I talked long and often on the phone, we agreed what I'd do to knock the rust off.

I'd been late enquiring, and he revised logistics in case I came. I was given time to regain paddling fitness, and the needs of the group I might join were never compromised for the sake of getting another client - so I trusted him even before we met.

In Greenland I was reminded about what good leadership is. The routine of the days were agreed, and the first couple of days were gentle as we acclimatised to fully laiden boats. Martin slipped in as a member of the group and only exerted authority when needed, such as at times - when the navigable channels were closing in fast and we needed to turn back - in an increasing breeze, blowing seaice towards our shore and he recognised the best plan for the conditions to avoid being trapped.

We saw and explored many old settlement sites and stayed in the odd hunters' hut. The mountains, glaciers, ice bergs and brash ice were far more of an experience than even in my wildest dreams.

Martin has a contagious enthusiasm for Greenland.

Greenland speaks for itself, we had space and energy on the trip to listen.

He also reminded me that good coaching is about few words, easily remembered, making a difference to my paddling and enjoyment of the whole experience.

After the trip there were emails from Martin keeping in touch with the group and exchanging photo's - again, the actions of someone doing it right, with a concern for the group and its friendships; with a passion for kayaking and Greenland that cannot but be shared.
